Mom's Orange-Cranberry Relish

This orange cranberry relish recipe that I found at George's food blog A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse www.gmg706.blogspot.com was delicious. I prepared it for Thanksgiving and it was a hit with the family. They enjoyed it as a side dish with the roasted turkey. The next day, the family enjoyed it again as a spread on turkey sandwiches.  I am going to prepare this festive relish for Christmas dinner. If you are looking for a relish to serve up with your roasted meats, think of adding this one to your holiday table. Thanks George!

Mom's Orange-Cranberry Relish
makes 2-3 cups
Recipe from: A Nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse

Ingredients:
1 pound fresh cranberries
3 tablespoons dried cranberries
2 sticks cinnamon
1 teaspoon fresh ginger root, minced
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup apple cider
1 teaspoon fresh grated orange zest

Directions:
In a 2-quart saucepan, place the fresh and dried cranberries, cinnamon, ginger root, brown sugar, apple cider, and orange zest. Stir and simmer over low heat until cranberries pop-about 7 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

To serve, transfer to a serving bowl.

Enjoy!

What an interesting dish, too bad I can't find fresh cranberries here, even dry ones, sometimes

My version isn't too far off that, but I use orange juice, where he used vinegar...I love cranberry juice, but seldom use cranberry dressing!

Velva... My mom will be so happy that you are sharing her recipe. You know, it was my mom that thought me that sharing a recipe was the best form of friendship and it honors all that passes it on.

So, glad that you liked it and shared it with your readers.

And now I know how to make it. Thanks.

Lovely! I like the addition of fresh ginger--it would give a nice spiciness to the relish.

Hi Velva, I love that cranberry relish... My hubby makes a mini-version of it--using cranberries, pineapple, celery and lemon juice. BUT--I love the one with orange in it also.

Thanks for sharing... May you and your family have a blessed Christmas.
Hugs,
Betsy

This is awesome. I will make this next year. I cook (like cook cook, from scratch and not from a box) once a year: for Thanksgiving. I make the side dishes. I have always enjoyed the no-frill cranberry sauce: Cranberry + Sugar. (Don't laugh!) This looks awesome. But you know, my husband still claims he likes the alien-looking jelly thingy the best. sigh.

On second thought, I think I am going to make it for my MIL to go with the ham and turkey she is serving tonight and tomorrow. Wish me luck! (And I will report back...)

I'm such a sucker for anything cranberry. I've made something similar from a Whole Foods recipe, though I think it included sherry or some other alcohol. The orange and ginger really make the cranberry flavor pop, don't they?
