The Knapp Family is a big family and a Christmas gathering is an exciting time for everyone. The focus is on family, food and fun. The table is filled with traditional family favorites and the eating festival begins Christmas Eve and continues well into the next evening.
On Christmas morning, my sister-in-law hosted a fabulous breakfast for family and friends. One of the main dishes that she prepared was a wonderful french toast casserole. The casserole is a blend of eggs, cream cheese, vanilla, and maple syrup which makes for a delightfully rich breakfast treat.

French Toast Souffle
Serves a crowd
Recipe prepared by MaryJane Whitten
Ingredients:
1 bakery loaf of butter crusty bread-10 cups cut into 1-inch cubes
8 (ounces) low-fat cream cheese, softened
8 large eggs
1-1/2 cups milk
2/3 cup half and half cream
1-1/4 cups maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
Directions:
1. Place bread cubes in a lightly greased 9x13 baking pan.
2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in milk, half and half, 1/2 cup of the maple syrup, and vanilla until mixture is smooth. Pour cream cream cheese mixture over the bread; cover, and refrigerate overnight.
3. Remove souffle from refrigerator, and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
4. Bake uncovered, for 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Pour remaining 3/4 cup maple syrup over souffle, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve warm.
Enjoy!

Velva, this sounds & looks fantastic! I'm sure everyone enjoyed it very much. And thank you for sharing. Hope you're having a fabulous day.
Blessings, Kristy
I usually do an egg and sausage casserole for Christmas morning. After several years of having it, including this year, I realized I want something different next year. And here it is!!! Thanks so much. I really look forward to giving this a try--I won't be able to wait until next Christmas!
Best,
Susan
Wow, that looks completely & insanely fantastic!!
ohhhh mmmmmmmmmmmm <3
Perfect breakfast. Totally decadent.
Mmmm...I always wanted to do a baked French toast. This looks good, the recipe I've been waiting for.
Sounds like a festive way to begin the morning! Happy New Year, Velva!
Wishing i was at your house this morning ~ Lovely dish ~ Wishing you the best in 2011!
souffle scared me a little (and I was very interested to see how you were going to get a souffle look). I would call this an incredible breakfast bread pudding myself. In fact, that's what i will next time we have company and a presentation dish needs to be done
Always love your blog, it was a terrific year,a nd looking forward to visiting as often as you post in 2011!!!
Dave

I've had breakfast already, but I find myself wanting some of this! It looks fabulous! :)
Mmm this sounds downright luscious! A serious crowd-pleaser.
Oh so good - it's a breakfast celebration that begs for a family to be gathered together. Oh! And it is scrumptious!

You know I am a number one fan...and this sounds great!
We had something similar at a B&B in Utah years ago, the hubby did the cooking, and it was yummy! You know I have my 'hubby eats cereal only' dilemma, so if I make this, it will have to be out of town one day fix!
The overnight casserole is a holiday must :) I've never had a bad one, and this one looks fabulous!
Love French Toast casseroles, this one looks so good, I need to have some!
Happy New Year!
Ooooh, baby baby! That must smell like heaven!
Lovely! Perfect for a holiday or company! What's next??? Valentines Day! How about a loving breakfast for the family! Great recipe!
What a festive and delicious souffle this is, Velva! I'm wishing you a very happy New Year!
OMG, looks fantastic Velva. I can't imagine how good this tasted.
This dish reminded me of one I made last year, only mine was a disaster. I tried to make it for a crowd in a huge deep pan and it wouldn't set up! So I learned my lesson and next time I'll make several smaller sized. I'll use your family recipe!
Fantastic! Almost like a cross between French Toast and a strata. Hope it's a delicious New Year!
Wow! That sounds fantastic! I am sure it tasted divine. Wishing you a very happy new year!
oh my goodness, this sounds amazing!
Breakfast food is my all-time favorite and this looks fabulous! Lucky you to be surrounded by such great cooks.
P.S. Those peanut butter and jelly bars are dangerous, aren't they? My friends and I just about wiped out the pan in one sitting. Definitely a keeper recipe.
Oh, my, this looks yummy! It would have been a great addition to my virtual New Year's brunch yesterday. Meanwhile, wanted to stop by and thank you for all your kindnesses. I'm boosting my donation to the Freestore Foodbank by an extra $20 in thanks for your letting me borrow your champagne pomegranate punch for the New Year's blogapalooza donation-a-thon.
Wishing you all the best in 2011! I know you will continue to inspire me!
Yummy. I tucked this recipe away for the next time I have to feed a crowd for breakfast. I made some french toast with homemade raisin bread this Christmas! I also tried homemade sticky buns!
That is one beautiful breakfast.
so jealous you have a big family!! it must be so nice having everyone there during the holidays. your french toast souffle must've been a huge hit. it looks fantastic!

We love french toast 'round these parts! this would surely be a hit in our household!
What an amazing dish for a brunch! I love the addition of maple syrup, yum!

This sounds absolutely delicious. Eggs, cream cheese, maple syrup, vanilla, yum...
What a great treat for brunch. I'll have to try it this weekend. Happy New Year to you... :)
Oh no! Just when I'm giving up souffles and you post this? I started salivating just at the title of your post. Looks like one resolution is going down in a hurry. Thanks for corrupting me! Truly. This looks too yummy to pass up!
oh. my. gosh. I want to eat this for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Oh wow, that looks amazing! Never knew that you can make a stunning souffle out of a boring loaf of bread :-)
Oh my stars...this looks like heaven in a pan!
WOW!this looks awesome!
I saw this being made on a tv show and this looks even better with your wonderful photo. Happy new year Velva!
OMG. That is one divine brunch dish, Velva. I love that the maple syrup is already in there. (Not that I wouldn't add more!)
Happy New Year to you!

I make French toast all the time...and yet, would probably never have thought to concoct a casserole with it. This recipe is perfect for a small hungry crowd ;o)
Velva, here's wishing you the very best in the New Year.
Flavourful wishes,
Claudia
Oh, this french toast souffle looks amazing. Wonderful stuff, a perfect Christmas breakfast.
Oh Lordy, Velva!
This souffle looks mouthwatering delicious!
Great way to kick of the new year!
Blessings to you dear,

Oh my, this looks fantastic-I imagine it has a wonderful aroma while baking!
The cream cheese just puts this one over the edge. I can just imagine how rich that first succulent bottom would taste.
Velva...
This looks SO good! Thanks for sharing. I'm bookmarking now & hope to make it for my Mops (mothers of preschoolers) group this spring. YUM!!

Looks DELICIOUS! What a great holiday breakfast to share with family :)
I have this in the oven now, and it smells delicious! I halved the recipe though as there is only 3 of us. Will post again after we eat.
hm ... that sound just yummy ... got the grandchildren coming over soon may have to try it out on them ... thank you for the idea happy pinning and love sandy xx
This is so good! I have been making this recipe for a few years! Just make sure to use Pure Maple Syrup! Aunt Jemima doesn't cut it! It's worth the extra cost! Mmmmm!!!
What is bakery butter bread? I want to make this but not sure what that is :) THANKS!
Would there be a way to make this without cream cheese?
Found this on Pinterest and just put it in the fridge for breakfast tomorrow. Cant wait to eat it! It looks divine! I added about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the mixture as well, as I really love cinnamon :)
tried this today and it was sort of eh... sorry, but it was a bit bland.
I too need to know what bakery butter bread is. Please help me. Thanks! Can't wait to make.
If you're looking for bakery butter bread, try brioche.
BTW, I made this for a bridal shower and it was a huge hit. No leftovers and everyone was raving about it. It was delicious.
Made this tonight for dinner. The flavor was really good but the top was a little like a crouton and the bottom a little soggy. What bread do you recommend!
For supper this evening, I made a half batch for my husband and I and there is plenty leftover for breakfast tomorrow morning. I sprinkled a brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on top before baking. Excellent!
Any one try this in a crockpot?
I also sprinkled cinnamon on top before cooking. It's delicious!
What is butter crusty bread? I can't wait to try this.
can you use french bread?
And why is this called a souffle???
Souffles separate the egg yolks from the whites and beat them separately. This is a casserole. Not a souffle.
Wondering if anyone has done this as a freezer meal?
Just made for family Christmas brunch and the family went crazy. everyone loved it! Thank you for the recipe!!
I made this for breakfast this morning! It was so wonderful. The only thing that I did differntly was to use a loaf of Peppridge Farm Pumpkin Spice Bread. It was so delicious. Thanks for the keeper! I even posted a picture on Pinterest with the link to your recipe.
My step sister makes this for Christmas Morning Breakfast every year....I asked her for the recipe many years ago and she refused to give it me because "it is a secret family recipe and I promised my aunt I would never let it outside the family"...lol.....guess what I am making for breakfast on Christmas morning? (insert evil laugh here)
Thank you for this recipe. I will certainly make it. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you. Australia
Can you prepare it Friday evending to have Sunday morning?
I used bolillo rolls and replaced half of the milk with vanilla almond milk (my husband goes through regular milk like crazy) and it smells so good!
Would I be able to use regular white Texas toast bread for this?
